Aiyedatiwa Pardons 40 Prison Inmates to Mark 60th Birthday

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa pardoned 40 prison inmates as part of his administration’s commitment to justice reform. This compassionate act highlights the governor’s focus on reintegration and rehabilitation.

Aiyedatiwa Demonstrates Commitment to Justice Reform Through Mercy

The Governor granted the pardons on the advice of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. Among the pardoned were 15 convicts who were released outright, effective Sunday, 12 January 2025.

Aiyedatiwa Commutes Death Sentences and Reduces Incarceration Terms

In addition to outright releases, Aiyedatiwa commuted several death sentences to life imprisonment. He also reduced the sentences of other inmates, reflecting his administration’s emphasis on fairness and rehabilitation.

Aiyedatiwa’s Mercy Marked by Thoughtful Deliberation

The state Attorney General, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN), revealed that Aiyedatiwa’s decisions were based on factors like age, health, behaviour, and offence severity. He described the pardons as a testament to the governor’s dedication to justice reform.

Governor Aiyedatiwa chose not to hold celebrations for his 60th birthday in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi. Instead, the pardons marked a significant gesture of grace.

Constitutionality of Aiyedatiwa’s Act of Mercy

Aiyedatiwa’s pardons align with Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers state governors to exercise mercy. This constitutional act was enriched by insights from legal experts, correctional authorities, and community leaders.
