Budget Presentation: IGP Addresses Budget Presentation "Drama"

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, addressed an incident during the Nigeria Police Force 2025 budget presentation. This occurred at the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions session on January 16, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja. The IGP described the incident as unnecessary and entirely avoidable. He clarified that the presented document had been previously shared with all committee members.

IGP Explains Budget Document Versions

The Inspector-General of Police emphasized that committee members received both comprehensive and abridged versions of the budget document. Both versions included identical figures and facts, ensuring transparency. The abridged version was designed to use simpler language, aiding comprehension. At the session’s outset, members unanimously agreed that the IGP would present the abridged version, as all had prior access to both.

Incident Sparked by Late Arrival of Senator

Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, arrived late and referenced the comprehensive version during the presentation. Despite explanations from other members regarding the unanimous agreement on using the abridged version, the senator remained unyielding. His refusal to listen led to an abrupt exit, which the IGP described as unnecessary drama that could have been avoided.

Inspector-General of Police Debunks Misinformation

The Inspector-General of Police clarified that the Nigeria Police Force did not submit two different budgetary proposals for 2025. He reaffirmed that the documents provided to the Joint Committees were consistent and identical in content. He called on the public to disregard misleading reports in the media about this issue.
