The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has addressed concerns surrounding her role. Speaking during an interview on Television Continental on Thursday evening, Kuku made a bold statement, emphasizing her commitment to her job. She remarked, “If I am tired, I will get out of the job.”

Kuku admitted to taking decisive actions that may have unsettled some individuals. She stated, “I have stepped on toes and I am still stepping on toes. I know I need to do that with caution, but definitely not at the jeopardy of the airport system.”

She added, “If I have to, I will step down. I will resign if I see that it is not working. What is important is to make sure that I do what is right.”

The Justification for the ₦580bn Runway Upgrade

The FAAN MD also addressed criticisms regarding the proposed ₦580bn required for the runway upgrade across Nigerian airports. She urged the public to understand the complexity and cost of maintaining and reconstructing aviation infrastructure.

Kuku explained, “We have a number of runways in Nigeria today. There are 22 airports owned by the Federal Government, and we also support some state-owned airports. I also made specific reference to airports with runways that have exceeded their lifespan.”

She noted that many runways in the country have been in use for over 30 years, exceeding their typical 20-25-year lifespan. “What it means is that we have to reconstruct those runways. The ₦580bn I initially mentioned covers over 17 runways, along with perimeter fencing and other necessary components,” she clarified.

Addressing Public Criticism of the ₦580bn Runway Upgrade

In response to public skepticism, Kuku encouraged critics to research the cost implications of such infrastructure projects. She said, “I have seen commentaries questioning what we need that amount for. Just look it up on Google to understand what it takes to build runways, taxi expansions, and all that is needed.”

Achievements Within 100 Days in Office

Kuku highlighted her accomplishments within her first 100 days as FAAN MD, emphasizing improvements in Nigerian airports. She said, “We have spent too much time talking about the decay, and it is time for us to start fixing things. That is exactly what we are doing.”

She cited the restoration of sanity to Nigerian aerodromes over the last 90 days as a significant achievement. “If you have been a traveller in the last 90 days, you will observe that the airports are cleaner and more friendly in terms of the atmosphere,” Kuku added.

Ensuring Continuity in Aviation Projects

Kuku also emphasized the importance of project continuity in Nigeria’s aviation sector. “What is more critical is the continuity. Wherever we stop, somebody needs to pick that up. That is the biggest challenge we see. Because of new administrations, we tend not to complete or continue old projects,” she explained.
