Lagos Teacher Remanded for Assaulting Three-Year-Old Pupil

A 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, was remanded by the Ogba Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting a three-year-old pupil. The incident, captured in a viral video, sparked widespread condemnation. In the footage, the teacher repeatedly slapped the child for struggling to write numbers.

Viral Video Exposes Lagos Teacher’s Actions

The video of the teacher assaulting the toddler surfaced online, drawing public outrage and prompting her immediate arrest. The police confirmed that the assault occurred on January 7, 2025, at Christ-Mitos Primary School, Ikorodu.

Court Proceedings Against the Teacher

During the arraignment, police prosecutor Supol Akeem Raji disclosed that the teacher inflicted facial injuries on the pupil, Abayomi Michael. The court heard that she assaulted the child with repeated fist blows, leaving him with a swollen face.

Charges Against the Teacher

The prosecutor revealed that the offences violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015. Despite pleading not guilty, Stella Nwadigo was granted bail of ₦200,000 with two sureties.

Police and School Response to Teacher’s Actions

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the teacher was remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Facility. He confirmed that the pupil had received medical attention following the assault. The school condemned the teacher’s actions and suspended her indefinitely.

Christ-Mitos Primary School reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and assured parents of its commitment to child protection. The school apologised to the affected family and introduced stricter child safety measures, including teacher training and a whistle-blowing system.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed that the teacher pleaded not guilty. The agency, alongside law enforcement, stressed its dedication to addressing cases of abuse. The Commissioner of Police praised the public for reporting the incident, promising swift action to ensure justice.
