New Tariff: Phone Call Rates to Rise to N18/Minute in Nigeria

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, confirmed a new tariff may increase telecom service costs. He stated that the anticipated hike would raise the floor prices of calls, SMS, and data by 30-60 percent.

This rise is notably less than the 100 percent increase proposed by telecom operators, which the government considers unrealistic. Tijani emphasized during a recent Channels TV appearance that the government aims to balance industry needs and citizens’ affordability under the new tariff.

Phone Call Costs Under the New Tariff

If the maximum 60 percent increase is implemented, phone call rates will rise from ₦11 to ₦18.33 per minute. SMS charges could increase from ₦4 to ₦6.67, while a 1GB data bundle may climb from ₦287.5 to ₦479.17.

Impact on Citizens and Businesses

Tijani warned that a 100 percent increase would severely affect Nigerians, many of whom rely on telecom services for daily activities. He stated, “This sector drives growth and development in Nigeria. A 100 percent tariff hike is simply harmful to citizens.”

Telecom Operators’ Struggles and Push for a New Tariff

The announcement comes after years of agitation from telcos facing mounting operating costs. Operating expenses have surged by 300 percent due to naira devaluation and inflation. Losses reported since 2023 have intensified calls for tariff adjustments.

Future Implications

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) aims to balance affordability with industry sustainability under the new tariff. MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, expressed optimism that an equitable resolution would ensure the industry’s survival while considering economic realities.
