Persons with Disabilities: Oyo Increases 2025 Budget Allocation

The Oyo State Government has taken a groundbreaking step by increasing its 2025 capital budget allocation for Persons with Disabilities by 70%. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and empower the disability community. Governor Seyi Makinde announced this progressive decision at the 2024 Stakeholders’ Summit, held in Ibadan during the International Day of PWDs.

Governor Makinde’s Commitment to PWDs

Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, representing Governor Makinde, emphasized the administration’s dedication to the welfare of Persons with Disabilities. He explained that the budget increment directly responds to the community’s needs, as highlighted during recent Budget Town Hall meetings. This move underscores the government’s determination to create a more inclusive society.

Expanded Budget for PWDs in 2025

The 2025 budget for Persons with Disabilities will rise to ₦877.5 million, up from ₦492 million in 2024. Additionally, the overhead budget for the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities will grow from ₦315 million to ₦345 million. These funds will address critical areas such as assistive devices, mobility equipment, transportation support, and training on disability inclusion.

Employment and Representation of Persons with Disabilities

Governor Makinde highlighted the integration of PWDs into the state’s workforce. Over 510 individuals have been recruited across various ministries, ensuring representation in government departments. The governor also praised Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, for spearheading impactful initiatives.

Advancing Advocacy and Governance for PWDs

Since its establishment, the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities has achieved significant milestones under Governor Makinde’s leadership. These include staff redeployment, operational office setup, and tailored budgeting. Grants and subventions for disability cluster groups and operational vehicles will further enhance service delivery.

A Model for Inclusivity in Governance

Governor Makinde reiterated that Oyo State remains the first to politically empower PWDs. Appointments of individuals with disabilities as Supervisory Councillors and Special Assistants reflect the administration’s inclusive approach. This effort positions Oyo State as a leader in disability advocacy and governance in Nigeria.
