Tinubu Enforces Ban on Homosexuality in Nigeria’s Military

President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive directive prohibiting homosexuality and other acts within Nigeria’s military. This directive aims to align military ethics with discipline and national values.

Introduces Strict Conduct Regulations

The revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, signed on December 16, 2024, outlines the bans. Military personnel are prohibited from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, crossdressing, and body piercing. These acts are now deemed incompatible with Nigeria’s military ethics.

The document states, “An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, and bestiality. He/she is not to belong to, or engage in activities of the LGBTQIA2S+ group and crossdressing, amongst others.”

Disciplinary Expectations for Nigeria’s Military

Military personnel are also barred from engaging in disorderly behaviour, drunkenness, and public disgraceful acts, whether on or off duty. Additionally, they are required to fulfill all financial obligations, including timely payment of vehicle licenses and insurance.

The document adds, “An officer shall pay all just financial obligations in a proper and timely manner. Failure to license or insure his vehicle constitutes an offence.”

Nigeria’s Military Prohibits Amorous Relationships and Private Businesses

Amorous relationships with subordinates or their spouses are strictly forbidden within military. The directive also bans personnel from joining secret societies or political parties.

Moreover, engaging in private business or misusing government property for personal gain is prohibited. The document emphasizes that such actions undermine discipline and tarnish the military’s image.

Accountability and Ethical Standards for Nigeria’s Military

The document specifies that officers must not accept gifts, favours, or entertainment from juniors or subordinates. While disciplinary measures for violations were not detailed, the focus remains on maintaining high ethical standards.
